Stegadon Conversion

When Games Workshop released the new lizardmen army book, The stegadon were not yet available. And I expected they'd take a while to hit the shelves, and would then carry a hefty price tag (but that's GW stuff for you :).

I found a plastic toy dinosaurus that offered a good potential for a conversion project, so I bought it and went to work. My computer and video camera happened to be next to my work table during that time (I was fiddiling on a video project with my computer) so I took snapshots during the whole project.

I eventually found the time to convert the images to Jpeg and put it all on a web page, so here we are ...

First, I made holes on the dinosaur body using a portable gas powered soldering iron (which you can see in the foreground).
It turned out that the plastic the toy was made of curls along itself making a sort of ring around the hole, which is neat since I'll put horns in these holes.
This effect was not planned as such, I just got lucky :)
It also stinks and fumes a lot when heated, so be careful not to breathe it if you ever try this at home.

I made holes in the tail as well, as there will be spikes on it.

Next, I have cut pins in two to shorten them and sticked them in the holes.
This will give the horns an armature and will hold them in place as well.

The horns have then been modelled using Milliput®
They have to be modelled around the pins, or else the pin heads will break them when you put them in place.

The tail spikes are modelled just as the horns.

I've split this in three pages, because it weights about 700 Ko in all. Click here to go to page 2.
